Borderline introduces readers to Rand Scott and, as part of the story, you begin to learn about him as a person, as well as something of his past. When it came to continuing his story, I was spoilt for choice in terms of what I could explore about him. In the end, I felt the right direction to go was backwards – at least in the sense that there was potential to reflect more on what had happened in his past and how that had shaped him.
For readers of Borderline, taking this approach would add meat to the bones (probably the least appropriate metaphor to use when you consider the animal rights element) to Rand’s backstory, whilst still providing new readers with a strong introduction to the character and his world. At the same time, there were some issues from Borderline that were unresolved, so it was important to at least include references to these - especially as some of them will continue in future books.
As a writer, I also had a new challenge. My previous books had been stand-alones, so I hadn’t had to worry about continuity or the fact that readers might start with books part way through the series. So I had the balancing act of making sure first time readers understood what was happening without giving away spoilers for Borderline. After all, the hope is you’ll enjoy the book enough to want to read more about the characters.
And I do mean characters plural. Rand Scott might be the protagonist, but there’s a supporting cast who seem to be attracting fans of their own. It’ll be interesting to see how readers feel about them as they develop as well.
