I first met Lauren North about 8 years ago at a gathering of authors and book bloggers. If memory serves me correctly, she was working on her first psychological thriller at the time. Since then, she’s had several published, and I’ve read almost all of them. As with so many readers, though, it’s hard to keep track of what I’ve bought, let alone which ones I’ve read. So it was with a mixture of disappointment and excitement that I realised I’d had My Word Against His sitting on my Kindle for a year and a half.

I hope the disappointment speaks for itself. Since I first started reading Lauren’s books, I’ve enjoyed them. And every new one seems to have got better than the last. So I’d missed out on a treat for 18 months. Then again, it was exciting – and for the same reasons. I had something to really look forward to.

Here’s the blurb:

I’m not a killer. But I can’t be trusted.

There are three things you should know about me:

  1. I’m a devoted mother
  2. I’ve been accused of murder
  3. I’m innocent

Two of those things are correct, one is not.

I have to convince the police I’m not guilty. But it’s my word against his.

So who will you believe: me or him?

There might have been a sense of excitement, but there was also a little trepidation. After all, my expectations were high. What if this book didn’t live up to those expectations?

I needn’t have worried. In line with past experience, this book was even better than her previous ones. It’s worth adding a qualifier to that statement because, as the story progressed, I started to work out what I thought was going to be the big plot twist. And I was right. At least, I was right about the twist. It came in the final few pages and I reflected at the time that, although it hadn’t been detrimental to my enjoyment of the book, it was a little disappointing that Lauren hadn’t managed to sideswipe me like she usually does.

What I hadn’t bargained for was another twist that she slid in when I thought it was all over. It was a twist I hadn’t even considered was an issue. Sideswipe achieved.

Is there anything else I can say about this book? Not really. Not without giving anything away. Aside from the blurb, this is definitely one to go into without knowing what’s going to happen. Just go along for the ride (and you’ll understand why I put it that way soon after you get started). If psychological thrillers are your thing, I’ll be surprised if you don’t love it.

All I’ve got to do now is make sure I don’t wait 18 months to read the other book of Lauren’s waiting on my Kindle.
